Painting is just another way of keeping a diary". ~Pablo Picasso

My artwork has a decidedly peripatetic quality to it because no matter where I go paintings emerge from every journey near or far. Inspiration comes from many sources: the way light falls; the history, colors and textures of a place; how the day feels - as in temperature, wind or calm, sun or storm. I paint what moves me so the sea, landscapes and images from trips will always be inspiring. The work will bear similarities but won't be one long string of churned out paintings each one mirroring the last. As an artist I'm more concerned with experimenting, exploring and seeing what happens next. Paintings of the Sea come from time I've spent in the Dune Shacks and on Cape Cod in general. Landscapes come from the Cape, Upstate NY and New England. I have traveled all over Europe and can never get enough of being there but my last trip to Southern Italy was a particularly moving experience and I hope to return soon and often.

I use every tool and technique I've learned to fit what the painting and subject require. Some pieces need a soft, smooth approach while others demand boldness and texture. My process is either to begin with a sketch surrounded by narrative and notes about color or as a watercolor, then moves to canvas. Works on paper frequently have a beauty all their own and there are many times when the watercolor ends up being complete in itself instead of being a sketch for a future painting. I tend to work serially doing runs of paintings on a particular theme, spinning out an idea often returning to favorite themes.

This website is a very small sample of the work I do so visit often to keep an eye on new work. I have exhibited widely over the US and Canada, been a grateful recipient of grants from the Rochester Arts Council, New York State Council on the Arts and Massachusetts Cultural Council, enjoyed artist-in-residencies at Pouch Cove, Newfoundland and in the Dune Shacks at the Cape Cod National Seashore.I am represented by the Lyman-Eyer Gallery (www.lymaneyerart.com) in Provincetown, MA and I am an exhibiting member of the Provincetown Art Association Museum and Salmagundi Club in New York City.
